IYE AJA (UMBILICAL CORD) PROJECT
IntroductionIROKO Theatre Company, a registered charity based in the Olympic Borough of Newham, has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards its "Iye Aja (Umbilical Cord)" Project. The project aims to highlight and celebrate the ingenuity of Diaspora Africans in managing to retain an active commitment to many customs and values of their forbears whilst also adapting them to suit living in the UK. Workshops leading to showcase presentations in three London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Newham will explore some African traditional rituals, beliefs and customs. Approximately 3,250 beneficiaries will experience this heritage through showcases, museum visits and exhibition tours in libraries, schools and community centres. These activities will enable the wider public to participate in this unique experience and in so doing widen access, learning and understanding of some of African customs and beliefs. Not only will your contribution help to raise consciousness and understanding of African heritage and culture but also, it will give it a voice within the wider communities in London and inspire young people to enjoy the many beautiful things that African heritage has to offer. If you have any questions about the questionnaire or the project, please contact the Project Coordinator on 020 8522 1950. Many thanks for your time.
